Catapalooza!
Spring brings many changes to Milledgeville. Some changes are welcome like the cherry blossoms and flowering dogwoods. Some are unwelcome, like the waves of yellow pollen blanketing cars and everything else. Spring also brings more and more homeless cats to Animal Rescue Foundation's shelter, and we are working hard to find families for these displaced pets.
In an effort to help these felines find new families and forever homes, ARF is hosting Catapalooza adoption special. Reduced Catapalooza adoption fees will be in effect from March 18 until March 31.
For the event, ARF is offering lowered adoption rates for the cats currently in the shelter. All cat adoption fees will be $50. “It’s raining cats at the shelter,” says Nikki Wheeler, the volunteer coordinator at ARF. “We have some really great animals who have been waiting months and months for a lifetime of love.”
Alzea is one of many ARF cats looking for a new home. This sweet grey and white kitty was turned in by her owner and has been at ARF since Oct. 5, 2011. The reason Alzea has remained so long at the shelter may be related to her status as a "special needs" cat. Alzea is hearing impaired. However, she would make a wonderful addition to a family willing to offer her extra love. Currently, ARF houses over thirty cats. Several of these cats have been ARF residents for over a year, while only a few are new to the shelter.
All pets are altered prior to or at the time of adoption. They are also up-to-date on vaccinations and can be micro-chipped for an additional $50. ARF is open 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday, Thursday – Saturday, and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The new board has an exciting agenda for 2013. Look for new fundraisers and events in the coming year.
In 1983, Bobbie Thompson founded the Animal Rescue Foundation, Inc. in Milledgeville, Georgia. ARF will soon celebrate its 29th anniversary as your local humane society. Over the years, Bobbie along with many other dedicated board members, animal caregivers, tireless volunteers and countless donors have contributed to ARF's mission of finding responsible permanent homes as family pets for abandoned animals, encouraging spaying and neutering of all pets, and educating the public on the proper care and treatment of animals. Over the years, the services that ARF has been able to offer with your support has varied but have always upheld the values of its mission.
In 2011 ARF was the recipient of a generous bequest that allowed the shelter to hire part-time Executive Director, Julie Paschall. Julie works passionately for the welfare of the homeless and abandoned dogs and cats in our community. Julie has brought fresh enthusiasm and ideas to ARF, has brought in new funding 
by identifying and winning grants, and continued, improved, or started exciting new programs, such as the local pet food bank, expanded adoption hours, and Fix Milledgeville a much needed, low cost spay/neuter program available through local veterinarians.
Long time board member Kathy Groseclose heads up ARF's humane education program. She and other volunteers visit many classrooms at local public and private schools. They teach elementary age children about proper pet care, dog bite prevention, and other valuable lessons.
Many Georgia College students complete community service requirements at ARF. With their help, dogs are walked, cats are entertained, cages are cleaned. We hope that ARF leaves with them with a much deserved sense of accomplishment and a lifetime desire to help their local humane societies and to continue to work for the welfare of the animals.
Volunteers and generous donors helped build the Peaceful Pet Crematory from the ground up. In 2009 the dream of having a local pet crematory became reality, and PPC opened for business. The compassionate staff at PPC provide dignity to deceased pets and help the owners left behind preserve their memories.
Volunteers and donors are instrumental to the success of ARF. They provide a variety of services from grounds maintenance, to fundraiser support, from animal care to office duties. Local businesses donate goods for the auction, food for our functions, or offer steeply reduced prices for services. When the shelter posts a need for newspapers, plastic bags, wading pools for the puppies to use during the heat of the summer, or even a fenced enclosure so the dogs can romp and play, donors and volunteers step forward.
ARF has many staunch supporters who have stuck by us through thick and thin. All of your efforts and donations, big and small, are needed, have made a difference and are much appreciated! Thank you, from the staff at ARF and from all of the dogs and cats in our care. The difference you have made in the life of these animals is significant and vital to our mission.

The Animal Rescue Foundation has partnered with HomeAgain to offer you another way to protect your dog. A microchip can be quickly and easily inserted under the dog's skin. If your dog ever becomes lost and is found by Animal Control or taken to a participating veterinarian, it can be scanned and returned to you. You can make an appointment for this service any time during normal shelter hours--Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. Plan to spend at least half an hour at the shelter for this procedure. Registration must be completed at the time of microchip insertion. The price is $40 for your first pet and $25 for each additional pet brought in the same visit. This one-time enrollment price includes the microchip, one-time activation fee and a one year membership in the HomeAgain Pet Recovery Service. When you arrive for your appointment, your dog must be on a leash or contained in a pet taxi.
